The Virginia football team wrapped up spring practice with the annual Spring Game on Saturday. The Orange offense defeated the Blue defense, 20-7. There’s more to discuss beyond the result, though. Here’s the first in a short list series.

1. The quarterbacks seem about even.

Greyson Lambert and Matt Johns have split reps with the first team throughout the spring and that carried through to the Spring Game too. Lambert completed 6 of 14 passes for 79 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He was sacked twice. Johns completed 11 of 23 passes for 66 yards with 1 touchdown. He was sacked once. That’s a combined completion percentage of 45.9%. That didn’t seem to match up with improved accuracy news from the rest of spring, but it wasn’t the best day for the duo in that category. If the accuracy issues continue for these two, a lot of other pieces around the roster may not matter.

So who leads the race? In limited views this spring, the competition still seems even. Lambert has the bigger arm and better intermediate throws. Johns has better mobility and provides a spark of energy when he’s in the game. Fans have split opinions on the best option. My guess is that Lambert likely starts the opener this fall.

2. Quin Blanding is really, really good.

Now that the obligatory quarterback discussion is out of the way, there’s one position not up for grabs at all right now. That’s the safety spot occupied by Quin Blanding. In the Spring Game, Blanding did exactly what he did all last season: make a lot of tackles. He had 9 stops in the final scrimmage after piling up 123 tackles as a true freshman last fall. He had an interception Saturday too. He had 3 picks and 6 pass break-ups last fall. Blanding has lived up to every ounce of his 5-star recruiting rating. He’s a fluid athlete, plays with good instincts, and isn’t afraid to hit.
