Senior Mike Tobey has been a key part of one of the most successful eras in Virginia basketball history. Back-to-back ACC Regular Season Championships. A 2014 ACC Tournament title. NIT or NCAA Tournament wins in all three seasons. 83 wins and just 23 losses.

Tobey has averaged 6.7 points and 3.9 rebounds in his career while playing 16.5 minutes. Advanced stats show his value beyond those modest numbers. Tobey’s per 40-minute numbers check in at 16.6 points and 9.5 rebounds, while his per 100-possession efficiency is at 110.8 for offense (1.1 points per possession) and 90.4 for defense (0.9 points per possession).

Last season, Tobey won the ACC’s Sixth Man of the Year Award from the league’s coaches. His numbers were career bests in both averages and advanced measures. (See end of article for embedded stats.) The good news for Hoo fans is that Tobey appears to have attacked the offseason with an increased purpose and his best season may be yet to come. He’s even added some shooting range to possibly provide some pick-and-pop post shooting to the Cavalier arsenal.

“I’m excited for what I’ve seen,” Virginia coach Tony Bennett said. “He’s had a few days in practice where he’s been almost unstoppable at times. That encouraged me. I didn’t see that as much over the years. He’s backed up three or four practices. He’s worked on his outside shot a lot and just some nice things he’s done. I’m hopeful for him. … This was another gear or another level that I hope will pay dividends. He’s going to be an important piece.”
