Early in the fourth quarter of Saturday against Louisville, the Virginia football team faced a potentially critical third down situation in what eventually ballooned to a 27-3 home win. At that point in the game, UVA held a 13-3 edge and a key stop at the start of the quarter could potentially stir up some momentum for the visitors. Cavalier quarterback Bryce Perkins had other ideas.
Perkins spotted a matchup he liked and quickly started signaling across the field to receiver Joe Reed. Shaking his hand back and forth sort of like a Hang Ten motion, he changed the play before the snap. Seconds later on 3rd-and-13, he lofted a pass over the defense to Reed for a 44-yard touchdown catch untouched.
That was the first Perkins to Reed touchdown connection. It also pushed the lead to 20-3 and essentially put any lingering doubts about the outcome to rest.
Perkins said the audible decision made sense in that scenario.
