Spring Football Report: This Year, the Players are Here

After two days of practice in beautiful weather, the Virginia football team (as well as everyone else in Charlottesville) woke up Sunday to snow falling on the ground. As a result, the Cavaliers will have to wait until Monday to get back on the field, but there has been no lack of interesting information from the first two days of spring practice. Here are some of the ongoing stories:

Structural Changes

Virginia head coach Al Groh is conducting training camp in a different fashion this season because of one crucial factor. Unlike last season, most of the players that will see major time on the field are already here in camp. Last season Groh understood that his freshmen were going to see a lot of the playing time, so there were certain schemes and plays that could not be worked on. Because of that fact, Groh has his team working on several timing and “feel” plays and schemes. In addition, Groh has focused on more 7 vs 7 scrimmages to get a jump on the season.

“This year’s structure is very different than last year,” Groh said. “A lot of the players that will be participating next year are here in camp with us. That fact makes spring practice a little more important.”
