A groundbreaking day

Under a tent in the middle of a Massie Road parking lot next to a pile of freshly carted-in dirt seems like a strange place for a lesson on the American Revolution.

But that didn’t stop Paul Tudor Jones II.

He told a gathering of media, coaches, and university officials at the groundbreaking for Virginia’s new basketball arena the story of John Paul Jones , the founder of the American navy who uttered the famous words, “I have not yet begun to fight.”

It’s that spirit of never giving up that he wants the Virginia basketball teams to emulate when they take the court of the 15,000-seat arena named after his father, who happens to share his name with the historical hero. And Jones has high expectations for future Virginia teams.
