Post-Spring Analysis: The Offense

Elton Brown

Technically, Virginia needs to replace three starters on offense, but it’s really more like one. With receiver Michael McGrew and fullback Jason Snelling coming back from medical redshirt seasons, they will step in for departed starters Ryan Sawyer and Kase Luzar, respectively, and should be upgrades at both positions. That means the only real question for the Cavaliers coming out of the spring is: How are they gonna replace Matt Schaub?

To be sure, calling that a big question is the same thing as calling Ralph Friedgen a big man. It’s an XXXL question.

Still, how many college football teams can say they will go into next fall with so few significant concerns? Virginia seems set at 10 of 11 positions on offense, with legit All-ACC candidates at no fewer than four spots — tailback Wali Lundy, tight end Heath Miller, right guard Elton Brown and left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson. Miller and Brown could be All-Americans. Same with kicker Connor Hughes, who certainly counts as an offensive weapon.
