Are Cavs Something Special — Or Just Bullies?

Heath Miller

We didn’t learn much about Virginia’s football team today that we didn’t already
know, and that’s a good thing and a bad thing. It’s good that the
Cavaliers proved once again that they can crush a crummy opponent. It’s a
shame that Akron, like Temple and North Carolina, couldn’t provide a
semblance of a challenge.

Even quarterback Charlie Frye, a supposed All-America candidate, failed to
give UVa’s pass defense an adequate test. The swarming Wahoos surely had
much to do with his ineffectiveness, but Frye simply wasn’t sharp and
never looked dangerous. The rest of the Zips were even worse.

Because of that, there is still no way to get a firm grip on just how good this team is. Are there significant chinks in UVa’s armor? If so, none of the first three opponents has been equipped to expose them. Until the Cavs play an opponent of comparable talent, until they face some real adversity, we won’t know if this is truly a special team or just a bully beating up on the weaklings of college football.
