Simpson Commits!

ESPN has been kind to UVa once again. Today, the Cavaliers received a verbal commitment from Harrisburg (PA) standout running back Mikell Simpson . Simpson, who is rated a 4-star prospect by Scout.com and Rivals.com, chose UVa over Alabama during a press conference on ESPN News this afternoon.

Simpson explained why he chose the Cavaliers earlier today.

“I like the fans down there and the coaching staff,” Simpson said on ESPN News. “I really enjoy being around and talking with Coach Dex my position coach. We get along real well. I think that offense best suits me for the type of athlete that I am as far as getting me involved in the run and passing game.”

At 6-1 and 185 pounds, Simpson was timed at 4.38 in the 40-yard dash during last year’s Nike camp in State College, PA. He is a versatile back with great rushing and receiving ability. Though he primarily played tailback in high school, he often split out as a wide receiver.

Simpson becomes the 22nd player in the 2005 recruiting class. In addition to UVa and Alabama, he received offers from Florida, Michigan State, Nebraska and UCLA among others.

Simpson is the fourth player to commit to the ‘Hoos on ESPN. Kai Parham committed for the 2002 recruiting class on an ESPN chat while, two years ago, UVa received commitments from Ian-Yates Cunningham and Jon Stupar on ESPN.com chats.
