Q&A with Darren Childs

6-0, 225-pound inside linebacker recruit Darren Childs is expected to sign a letter of intent with UVa very soon and will become the 23rd member of the 2005 recruiting class.

Childs, who attends Mission Bay High School in San Diego, California, initiated contact with UVa several weeks ago. UVa coaches were extremely impressed with the video tape they received and, after seeing him in person last weekend, they decided to offer and he accepted. He plans on enrolling at UVa in June or July. He is undecided on a major.

As a senior last season, Childs averaged 10 to 12 tackles per game according to Mission Bay Head Coach Dennis Pugh. Of his MVP last season, Pugh says “he’s a tough kid, a strong kid and a good hitter.” Pugh believes Childs can put on about 20-25 pounds of weight and be able to keep his speed and quickness.

Childs has been a dual-sport athlete in high school. In addition to football, he also plays on the varsity basketball squad.
