Before his sophomore year at Forestville (MD), Devonte Campbell had never played football. He had been and still is a very good basketball player, but football was and still is something new. Playing football has turned out to be a great move for the 6-3, 230-pound linebacker/tight end recruit, who, after a very good junior season, has drawn scholarship offers from six Division 1A program including one from the University of Virginia.

“He’s a basketball player who had never played football in his life,” Forestville head coach Charles Harley said. “As a sophomore he came out on the first day of practice. He didn’t get much done his sophomore year because pretty much everything was new to him, but you could tell by the end of that year that he had the tools to be a really good football player. He wanted to quit because it wasn’t something he was used to, but he stuck with it. I got him invited to the Nike combine and he did well. Then he went to the elite combine and he dominated.”

As a junior this past season, Campbell had 20 catches for 718 yards and 11 touchdowns. He played linebacker and defensive end as well, tallying over 60 tackles including 10 tackles-for-loss and seven sacks on the defensive side of the ball.
