Virginia is one of four schools to officially offer Somerville (N.J.) standout Mason Robinson . Robinson, a very fast player who excels in the 100 meters in track and field, excelled on both sides of the ball last season for head coach Kevin Carty and is the type of player who could help a program in a variety of areas on the next level.

“He’s pretty special,” Carty said of Robinson. “He’s a real good football player. He’s about 5-10, 182 pounds right now. He ran 11 flat 100 meters as a freshman, 10.7 as a sophomore and he has his first track meet on Tuesday. He can run, but in my mind the best thing about Mason is that he’s such a good football player that he could be recruited even if he wasn’t as fast as he is. He’s not a track star who plays football, but he’s a football player who runs fast. He’s got great hands. He’s got great hips. He’s strong and obviously he has speed. He’s smooth.”

In his sophomore season, Robinson saw significant playing time at cornerback but only limited time at running back. Because of a deep depth chart, he only received 31 carries his sophomore season. But he did well on defense and showed enough of his abilities to earn a verbal scholarship offer before his junior year.
