FanWatch: HooKat Joined "Good Guys" in 1958

Fred Adams (HooKat) has been a Virginia football fan since 1958.

Some of the newer Virginia football fans may not remember the days before George Welsh arrived. Fred Adams (HooKat) does. After all, he’s been a football season ticket holder off and on for the past 35 years. That’s why ol’ GW is still his favorite Cavalier coach – “he breathed life into a lifeless program.”

HooKat still attends all home games and usually several away games each year. His wife, Lori, aka HooKitten, attends the games as well, along with two daughters and a son with their spouses. Whenever he can’t catch the game live and in person, Adams settles for the TV or the radio broadcast.

Of course, those aren’t the only time he watches the game – he records every game that is on TV on at least two VCRs. Why? “Just in case there’s a problem with one,” of course. He’ll watch the games over and over for many years. He still has many of the most important games on tape, going back to the first bowl game. Dedicated? You bet. Let’s go on the prowl with HooKat in Sabre FanWatch …

“The FanWatch Fifteen”

Favorite Cavalier Sport?

Football with Baseball a very close second.

Anthony Poindexter remains a fan favorite as a coach.

Favorite Cavalier Athlete (past and/or present) and Why?

Anthony Poindexter. The first time I saw Dex on the football field, before he had ever played in a game, I saw a leader and predicted that he would become a star and a fan favorite.

Favorite Cavalier Coach (past and/or present) and Why?

George Welsh because he breathed life into a lifeless program.

Most Memorable Cavalier Sports Moment From Last Season?

The win over FSU.

Dinner with any Cavalier Athlete (past and/or present)?

Dr. William Kanto. A native of Norton, Virginia, my hometown as well, Bill Kanto attended UVa and played football in the early 1960s. He went on to medical school and became a very successful pediatrician in the Atlanta Area. I had dinner with him at our high school reunion several years ago. As I recall, he made the All-ACC Academic Team a couple of years. He was a decent, if small offensive lineman.

Tailgating Must Have?

Beer Dogs and all my Wilk Hall friends.

Shirts and Ties or Sea of Orange?

Although once a huge “Sea of Orange” fan, I am protesting at the moment and wearing Blue only.

Describe the Perfect Sports Day/Weekend?

Arrive at our Wilk Hall Tailgate site at the break of dawn to eat, drink, and visit with my friends and family until game time. Then, watch the Hoos kick the opposing team’s butt about 70-0, especially if the team happened to be VT, UNC, MD or about a dozen others that I can think of.

Fred Adams was orginally a bigger Hokie fan. (Gasp!) It’s O.K., however, because the good guys won out.

What’s your ‘go-to story’? In other words, if you’re with a group of buddies at a new tailgate and you have to tell a story about yourself to break the ice, what story would you tell?

I’d tell them about how for many years, I was a bigger Hokie fan than a Hoo fan, but the GOOD guys won out in the end. I have been a UVa football fan since 1958, when a high school upperclassman went to UVa and started playing football.

Your thoughts on the new John Paul Jones Arena?

It is an absolutely beautiful facility and something all UVa alums, students, and fans can be very proud of.

Favorite Thing About TheSabre.com? or Best Sabre Memory?

I first started following the Sabre back before it was the Sabre and the best part of it is the many, many friends that I have made through my connections with them on the Sabre. Friends like Boardhost, Mikeysurf, WahooFla, VBHOO, DCHoo, hoomanchew, bruhoo, Doug, and many others – too many to list here.

If you were running the Scott Stadium sound system, what music would you choose as the entrance music?

The current music used is fine, but the sound system just plain sucks … it needs a major overhaul.

Favorite “Adventures of CavMan” so far? If you haven’t seen the ones at Scott Stadium, what sort of dilemma would you put CavMan in for the entrance video?

Sorry, but I am not a big fan of the CavMan spot…..it is great for those who enjoy it, but I am too anxious for kickoff at that point to get into it.

Favorite Food? Favorite Charlottesville restaurant that serves it?

Any pasta dish at Vivace, the Italian restaurant up on the hill just off Ivy Road.

Cavalier Sports Fantasy?

Winning national championships in football, basketball, and baseball all in the same school year.
