As of now, 6-2, 225-pound linebacker prospect Chimso Okoji (pronounced Chim-so Oh-ko-gee) is scheduled to make an official visit this weekend to the University of Virginia. The Kennedy (Silver Spring, MD) standout is hoping for a scholarship offer from the ‘Hoos should he make the trip.

“Coach Garrett told me that he believes that, once I meet Coach Groh, based on my physical attributes and my academics, an offer will come,” said Okoji, who spoke with Coach Garrett twice yesterday.

“I’m leaning towards going to Virginia this weekend. The only thing that could stop it is that they haven’t offered. I have told the other two schools I might visit that I’m going to Virginia, but they said if I wanted to switch then I could just pick up the phone.”

Okoji has taken three official visits to this point – William & Mary, Central Florida and Iowa. He visited Iowa last weekend and came away with an offer from the Hawkeyes.

“I enjoyed it,” Okoji said of his official visit to Iowa. “It was a good visit. I love the coaching staff and how the players interacted.”

Boston College and Michigan State are the latest programs to offer, and these two programs would be under consideration for a visit this weekend should Okoji decide not to go to Virginia. The Maryland prep star discussed his interest in Virginia and his reason for making the official visit.

“Initially, at the start of this recruiting thing, I showed some interest in Virginia,” Okoji said. He has visited UVa on several occasions. “UVa was at the top of my list of schools that I could see myself going to. The reason I may be wavering on the visit – which has been set for two or three weeks – is that I didn’t see why nothing has happened in terms of an offer. They have my senior film.”

Asked if he had any favorites, Okoji replied, “I’m considering just about all of the schools involved except for Central Florida and William & Mary.”

In his senior season at Kennedy, Okoji, who played middle linebacker, racked up 151 tackles including 10 sacks. Fast for his size, he claims to have run a 4.61 in the 40-yard dash last year.

“I see myself as an outside linebacker on the next level,” Okoji said. “I try to use my speed and to use my reaction time to make plays. I like attacking downhill.”

An excellent student who carries a 3.8 grade point average, Okoji is interested in majoring in Business.

Location…

Is location a factor?

“For me personally? No. But, for my parents, it might be,” Okoji answered. “But, in the end, I think they would support me like they always have.”
