Jared Green Commits to UVa

Cross-posting Chris Horne’s article on Jared Green joining the 2007 class ().

Interesting that Coach Groh told some visiting recruits this weekend that the class is full – and thus not giving offers to some solid talents with Wahoo dreams.  With Green, I count (and Chris and other Edge posters confirms) room for at least one more.  And some recruits might have to prep – meaning room for a few more.

Add another son of a former NFL star to the UVa football program. Yesterday, the ‘Hoos landed a commitment from Jared Green , a 6-2, 165-pound wide receiver prospect out of Oakton in Vienna, Virginia. Green is the son of former Washington Redskins star Darrell Green.

Green committed to UVa while on his official visit this weekend and is very excited about his decision according to Oakton (Vienna, VA) head coach Joe Thompson.

“Yes, he did commit,” Thompson confirmed.

“I think he’s really excited about it. It’s a good fit for him socially. It’s a good school. The coaching staff has been very receptive to him. Coach Poindexter has been great with him. I think one of the big worries for him naturally was if he was being recruited because he was Jared Green . I think the Virginia coaches showed that they were recruiting him for him. They weren’t going to make an offer until they was sure he was the right fit for them.”

As a junior, Green was a part of a team that captured the Group AAA, Division 6 state championship. In his senior season, he tallied 17 receptions for 245 yards and four touchdowns.

Green is being recruited by UVa as a wide receiver.

“I would say [UVa] has been interested in him for the last year,” Thompson said. “Jared was one of those wait-and-see cases for everybody. Everybody wanted to see how he did in his senior season and over the off-season. Virginia has been recruiting him for over a year.”

Thompson has seen terrific growth in Green’s abilities from the 2005 to the 2006 seasons.

“I think his growth has been amazing,” Thompson said. “You are talking about a kid who is over 6-2. Last summer, he ran sub 4.4 40s at a couple of different camps. That opened some eyes. The progression he made in his route running was excellent.

“For his future progress, I think the upper body is the key. If he puts some weight on and bulks up, I think everything else will take care of itself. And that is going to happen – UVa is a great program.”

Green is dedicated to becoming a good football player, and his father is there to support him in his development.

“Darrell has never pushed anything on Jared. When Jared made the decision that he wanted a future in football, then his dad responded,” Thompson said. “I think Jared decided to dedicate himself towards the end of last year. I think he came to Oakton for reasons other than football. He wanted to see what the whole thing was about. He really was raw, but he was willing to work with us to get technical.

“I would expect to see a huge growth in Jared athletically. He’s just starting to tap his potential.”

Asked if Jared was solid academically, Thompson replied, “There are no problems in terms of Jared and UVa.”
