10-Day Hoo Preview ’07: Q&A – Danny Aiken

Danny Aiken is battling for the starting long snapper slot.

Virginia coach Al Groh said this week that two true freshmen – receiver Dontrelle Inman and snapper Danny Aiken – have started to press for early playing time this fall. In Aiken’s case, he could be a vital part of the field goal and punting units on special teams as he competes for the starting long snapper position vacated by two-year starter Tyrus Gardner.

Aiken, a talented snapper out of Cave Spring and Fork Union Military Academy, spent time at tight end, defensive end, punter, and quarterback in addition to snapping during his career. While that sort of versatility is prized by Groh, Aiken won’t be asked to wear so many hats early in his Cavalier career. The Hoos just need the Roanoke product to consistently snap the football. Punter Ryan Weigand , who said Aiken has caught on “really fast” and has “a lot of potential”, said the snapper’s duty is an important part of a successful kick.

“It’s huge. I’d say the biggest part for me is the drop, but the snapping has a lot to do with it as well,” Weigand said.
