Sylven Landesberg

The Virginia men’s basketball program landed one of its top targets in the 2008 class today, when Holy Cross (Flushing, N.Y.) guard Sylven Landesberg announced his verbal commitment at a 3:00 press conference. The 6-5, 195-pound senior pledged to Virginia over Georgia Tech and St. John’s, among many others.

One of the top prospects in the state of New York, Landesberg averaged 25.7 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game last season as a junior. A versatile prospect, he has the ability to play the 1, 2 or 3 positions but is being recruited as a combo guard by Dave Leitao and staff.

Georgia Tech, Kentucky, St. John’s, Texas and Virginia were among the programs to officially offer Landesberg, who narrowed his list to three schools earlier this month. He made an unofficial visit to UVa and official visits to Georgia Tech and St. John’s before coming to a decision. His only previous experience in Charlottesville was for the NBPA Top 100 Camp this past June.

Landesberg, who will sign a letter of intent in November, becomes UVa’s first verbal commitment for the 2008 recruiting class. The Cavs are expected to try and sign three prospects in this class, so two spots remain.
