It didn’t take long for the Ross Metheny era to begin at Sherando High School (Stephens City, VA). Metheny, now a 6-3, 190-pound junior, has been the Warriors starting signal caller since he arrived on the high school football scene as a freshman in 2005. He performed very well that year, setting school records for yards (1,918) and touchdown passes (17) in a single season.

“In July, our school has a camp for 6th to 8th graders. It is a good time to get plays in for high school. Going into the 9th grade, I was at that camp and Coach [Bill] Hall said I should stay down with the varsity,” Metheny recalled. “I was getting all the reps with the big guys. It took me by surprise, but a lot of seniors took me under their wing and I was able to help give them a successful season. We made it to the state semifinals.”

As a sophomore, Metheny led Sherando to an undefeated regular season. He played well, throwing for 1,795 yards and 14 touchdowns, but the team finished on a sour note when it fell in the first round of the playoffs. After last season’s disappointing finish, Sherando and its star signal caller are off and running once again. The squad is a perfect 7-0 on the year following last week’s 61-0 win over Warren County.
