Trend Report
What’s up?
Third down conversion offense. We noted in our defensive scouting report last week that for GT opponents “on third and 10+ yards to go, the completion percentage drops to 27% and the conversion rate drops to 5%.” Breaking it down even further, on third and greater than seven yards to go, the Jackets were holding opponents to a 9 of 57 conversion mark (16%) and placing the offense in that position an amazing 54% of the time. While the Hoos failed to avoid the 54% threshold (10 of 18 third downs were 7+ yards), they managed to convert 4 of the 10 for a very impressive 40% conversion rate.
Overall, Virginia converted 61% of its third down opportunities against a strong Tech defense, continuing a trend we’ve seen over the Cavaliers’ four-game winning streak. Against Maryland, ECU, and UNC, the Cavaliers completed 75% of their passes and advanced the chains 38% of the time. UVa went 5 of 6 running for third down conversions (83%) against the Jackets and completed 75% of its passes on third down, converting 50% of its chances passing. Virginia’s 11 for 18 conversion rate is the most Tech has allowed since Wake Forest converted 11 of 21 in October 2002.
