Recruiting Recap

The news certainly wasn’t light on the recruiting trail, so here is a recap of some of the week’s events with Virginia football recruiting. The news includes an incoming visitor this weekend, UVa being eliminated from a top prospect’s list and more.

Josh Barr of the Washington Post reported earlier this week that Virginia will host 6-3, 240-pound DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) defensive end Jeremiah Mathis on a visit this weekend. The Cavaliers are recruiting Mathis as an outside linebacker, a position the staff really appears to want to add at least one more prospect to in this class.

Virginia holds a commitment from one outside linebacker prospect, Charlotte Catholic (Charlotte, N.C.) 6-3, 220-pound standout Tucker Windle . Brooke Point (Stafford, VA) 6-4, 240-pound star Lanford Collins and St. Xavier (Cincinnati, OH) 6-3, 215-pound standout Luke Kuechly have been offered as outside linebackers as well and are considered top targets. It is unclear at this time where Mathis may fall into the staff’s plans, though with the visit the staff is obviously keeping tabs on this talented athlete.

Mathis reportedly holds offers from N.C. State and Syracuse and is also drawing interest from Kansas State and Maryland in addition to the Cavaliers. Look for Collins to come down to Penn State, Virginia and Virginia Tech in his decision. He has taken official visits to UVa and Penn State so far. Boston College, Duke, Stanford and Virginia are the finalists for Kuechly, who has an official visit to Stanford left to take before he makes his decision. Kuechly will go to Stanford on the weekend of January 9th.
