It was a tough 2008 season for Penn Charter’s (Philadelphia, PA) varsity football squad, which played without its starting quarterback of three seasons for much of the year due to injury. The team persevered, finishing with a 4-6 record under first year head coach Jeff Humble. One of the bright spots on the year was the play of 6-5, 260-pound defensive end Justin Renfrow , who racked up 55 tackles with nine-and-a-half sacks, two fumble recoveries and one interception.

One of the UVa recruit’s best performances came in Penn Charter’s first win of the season.

“That game, which was my first win as a head coach, was against Peddie,” Humble recalled. “It was the first game our sophomore quarterback started. Our senior quarterback, Matt Ryan’s little brother, broke his collarbone and was out for the season. Our defense was keeping us around in this game. We were losing 7-0. Justin batted a ball up in the air, caught it and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown. We ended up winning 13-7. If it wasn’t for Justin and the rest of our defense, there was no way we would’ve won. He had a couple of sacks and a lot of pressures.”
