Milstead, Joseph Receive Rock Weir Award

Two sophomores that were prized recruits in the 2007 class of signees received the Rock Weir Award on Saturday. Lamar Milstead , a 6’5″, 290-pound tackle, and Dom Joseph , a 6’1″, 195-pound cornerback, picked up the most improved honors for their work through the spring. UVa coach Al Groh said both players had worked to earn a viable position on the depth chart heading into the fall.

“When these were announced [Friday], both of these players were roundly applauded by the rest of the team because the players recognize how far these two kids have come with their game,” Groh said.

It’s the second straight spring that an offensive tackle received the Rock Weir; Milstead follows Landon Bradley as the offensive winner. Milstead joined the 2007 class late after he switched his verbal from UNC to UVa in January. A four-star prospect, Milstead fit the Cavalier O-Line mold thanks to a blend of athleticism and size. Groh said Milstead made great strides this spring.

“Lamar is a great example [of how] every player progresses at a different rate,” Groh said. “He’s really applied himself and moved his game light years from where it was.”
