UVa Offers Washington Guard Joe Harris

Chelan (WA) guard Joe Harris played in a tournament in Portland the Friday, Saturday and Sunday before heading out across country to participate in UVa’s Elite Basketball Camp, which took place on the Monday and Tuesday of last week. The 6-6, 200-pound rising senior played well despite having to get much of his rest in an airplane and in a layover at Charlotte International Airport, impressing the Cavaliers staff enough to receive a scholarship offer days after the camp.

“Joe was not offered at the camp,” said Joe Harris ‘ father, Joe, who is also the head varsity basketball coach at Chelan. “He was offered just this past week. When we left the Elite Camp, we had a good conversation with Coach Bennett, Coach Sanchez and Coach McKay. We felt real comfortable. This last week, while Joe was at a team camp, Coach Bennett called me and offered.”

Harris, the Class 1A Player of the Year in Washington last season as a junior, received interest from Tony Bennett when Bennett was at Washington State. He didn’t initially hear much following Bennett’s move to UVa, but a recent phone call from Virginia’s new head coach indicated the interest was still there.

“For him to make the phone call, we knew it was more than standard interest,” Coach Harris said.
