3-Star TE Joins Virginia’s 2010 Class

Zachary Swanson , a 6-6, 225-pound tight end out of Katy High School in Texas, has committed to the University of Virginia according to multiple sources. Swanson becomes the 18th member of Virginia’s 2010 recruiting class and the sixth high school senior to commit since Mike London took over as Cavaliers head coach.

Attempts to reach Swanson and/or Katy head coach Gary Joseph have been unsuccessful so far, but you can check out reports on the Daily Press and ESPN.com. We’ll have more on the commitment later today.

Swanson originally committed to Stanford before withdrawing his commitment when the Cardinal staff asked that he grey-shirt, meaning he would sign with the 2010 class but enroll in January of 2011. He considered offers from Army, Baylor and Rice before committing to UVa, where he visited on the weekend of January 22nd-24th.

After trying to implement the spread offense last season, Virginia plans to move to a pro-style offensive attack under London and new offensive coordinator Bill Lazor. Tight end is a need and Swanson, who is rated a 3-star recruit by Rivals.com and Scout.com, should fit in well.

“He has been a 3-year starter for us,” Katy head coach Gary Joseph told TheSabre.com in January. Katy, which captured state titles in 2007 and 2008, plays in the biggest classification in Texas High School football. “He has got good height. He’s a very aggressive kid. College coaches have liked his aggressiveness. He caught about 21 passes for us last season. He is a big target, but it’s a big deal here to be able to block. We like to run the ball.”

An excellent student, Swanson is considering a major in Engineering or Business. Both of his parents attended Georgia Tech according to Joseph.
