UVa’s Latest Commit: OT Kelby Johnson

DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) continues to be good to the University of Virginia. Last night, 6-8, 285-pound offensive tackle Kelby Johnson became the second 2011 class prospect to commit to the Cavaliers from the nationally regarded program.

“I felt like Virginia was the best school for me,” Johnson said of why he committed to Coach Mike London and company last night. “It is close to home, a good school and I can get a real good degree. It’s a real good program. I like what they have done with their offensive linemen. It’s a family atmosphere and I definitely had to have that. There are guys I know going to the school now and other guys, like [fellow 2011 commit Jordan] Lomax and [UVa 2010 commit] Kyrrel [Latimer], coming with me. It felt like home.”

Johnson has known Lomax since the 8th grade and Latimer since he was a freshman. Though he wanted to make an early commitment, Johnson admits that Lomax’s decision had an impact on his own.

“It made me more comfortable with committing to Virginia right now,” Johnson said.
