JHoo’s Summer Reading 2010: Defensive Ends

Cam Johnson snagged an interception in the Spring Game.

Speed. It is the key to the defense that Mike London and Jim Reid want to put on the field, and if there are any two positions where you can see UVa’s new emphasis on speed, it is at defensive end and outside linebacker. This week, we will take up the former and while there are a lot of unknowns when it comes to the new crop of 4-3 defensive ends, there are two knowns: they are a heck of a lot faster than the old crowd and they are not short on potential.

The Starters

When it comes to potential, Cam Johnson quickly comes to mind as potential is not something he is lacking. There are only a few players who have shown up on Grounds at Virginia, come out for their first week of practices, and made me take a long, long second look because of their raw athleticism. Chris Slade was one. Ahmad Brooks was another. So was John Bivens . Then there was Cam Johnson. And I was not the only one to take a long, long second look at Cam Johnson when he first arrived.
