The Sunday Sampler – Maryland

Terence Fells-Danzer scores on a fake field goal.

So, yeah, Mike London and the Cavaliers like a little special teams’ trickery don’t they? For the second straight week and third time this season Virginia scored a touchdown on a special teams’ fake, this time victimizing Maryland with a fake field goal in the first quarter of Saturday’s contest. Unfortunately, the Hoos came up short in the end despite the gusto associated with the surprise play as the Terrapins rallied to win 42-23.

Still, the hocus pocus touchdown play was fun to watch. Coincidentally, the drive started with a little bit of misdirection on the kickoff return when Perry Jones handed off to Kris Burd , who ran 47 yards to the Maryland 35-yard line. After gaining 16 yards on the drive’s first four plays, UVa faced a 4-th-and4 from the Terp 16. Already trailing 7-3, the Cavaliers sent the field goal team out from the sidelines and lined up the formation. Robert Randolph had already made a 35-yarder earlier in the contest so the 33-yard attempt was well within his wheelhouse.
