Reports: Romero Now A Cavalier

Apparently, a North Carolina loss will be UVa’s gain. Multiple outlets, including VirginiaPreps.com, which first broke the story, report that two-time Peninsula district Defensive Player of the Year Daquan Romero has withdrawn his original commitment to UNC and committed to the Cavaliers.

Initial attempts to reach Romero and Phoebus head coach Stan Sexton have been unsuccessful, but we hope to have more on this story as soon as we can. The Daily Press’ report cites confirmation from the Phantoms head coach.

At 6-1, 215 pounds, Romero impresses with his power and ability to rush the quarterback. He totaled 19 sacks last season as a junior, earning Peninsula district Defensive Player of the Year, an honor he received once again this season. A defensive end and tight end for the Phantoms, Romero likely will end up at outside linebacker for the Cavaliers.

“I don’t know where he is ranked defensively, but I haven’t seen too many guys that play like he does. He is probably by far one of the top defensive players I’ve seen,” Coach Sexton said in an EDGE article last December. Sexton’s squad, undefeated so far in 2010, will face Hampton in the Division 5, Eastern Region final this Friday night.

Romero’s commitment gives Virginia two Phoebus standouts — linebacker Caleb Taylor being the other — in Mike London’s first full class as head coach. Including Romero, Virginia now boasts seven commits from the 757 area code.
