Hoo Preview 2012: How To Tackle

Anthony Poindexter proved to be a great tackler in his UVa career with 342 stops.

After struggling with a switch in schemes in 2010, Virginia’s defense displayed tremendous improvement in the second year of coach Mike London’s tenure. Defensive coordinator Jim Reid’s unit trimmed the averages for points, total yards, first downs per game, rushing yards, and third down conversions per game. That defensive progress played a huge role in the Cavaliers’ 8-5 season.

UVa bettered one area significantly. Tackling. Players took better angles and wrapped up more consistently. The numbers show more successful one-on-one tacklers. The Hoos posted 417 solo stops in 2011 (34.75 per game) and 460 solo stops in 2012 (35.38 per game).
