Virginia wrapped up the ACC regular season title with a convincing 75-56 win against Syracuse on Saturday. This is the first of two Double Bonus articles looking back at the victory.
Tobey’s Impact
Virginia sophomore center Mike Tobey has had bigger nights statistically, but it sure looked like he took a giant step forward against Syracuse. Tobey logged 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 1 steal in 23 minutes. He made 5 of 9 shots, including several buckets off of 5 offensive rebounds. Tobey made a high post jumper and threw down a two-handed dunk on the interior when Malcolm Brogdon spotted him down low.
There was a notable toughness to Tobey’s game Saturday too. Several of those rebounds were in heavy traffic as he out-muscled people for the ball. On one defensive rebound early in the game, Tobey cleared off the defender with a monster forearm and finished off the play.
“They’re a really good team obviously so I needed to go in there and rebound strong. I did a better job with that today,” Tobey said. “Offensive glass. We knew that was a big key to our success on offense. We did that well.”
