Productive Linebacker Josh Ahern Verbally Commits To Virginia Football

For the second time in three classes, the Virginia football program has received a commitment from a prospect out of Lake Braddock High School in Burke, Virginia. The latest is class of 2019 linebacker Josh Ahern, who announced his college decision on Twitter Friday evening (May 25).

On January 29 of this year, Virginia became the first school to offer the 6’3″, 220-pound Ahern, who has since added offers from Air Force, Army, Cincinnati, Navy and Temple, among others. He traveled to Charlottesville at least twice — once for a Junior Day in February and again for the final spring practice on April 28 — before coming to his decision.

Ahern enjoyed a tremendously productive junior season, racking up 182 tackles (109 solo efforts, 23 tackles for loss), 7 pass breakups and 3 interceptions from his middle linebacker position. The 2017 first-team all-Occoquan Region linebacker selection also played tight end for the 8-4 Bruins.

247Sports ranks Ahern as a 3-star prospect and the no. 24 overall recruit in the state of Virginia in the class of 2019. He becomes Virginia’s 7th commitment in the class and the second likely linebacker, joining outside linebacker Jairus Satiu of Utah. Virginia has signed four linebackers in each of head coach Bronco Mendenhall’s first two full recruiting classes (2017, 2018) as Cavalier head coach. It appears likely he’ll do the same in this year’s class as well.

Running back Lamont Atkins was the first Lake Braddock product to sign with Virginia during the Mendenhall era. He signed in 2017 and is now entering his sophomore season in Charlottesville.
