Jaylin Lackey, 2024 CB, Commits To Virginia Football

The recruiting roll this week continued for the Virginia football team as the Hoos added their fourth pledge of the week. South Gwinnett High School cornerback Jaylin Lackey made it back-to-back commitments from Georgia with his decision to join the program.

Lackey’s choice came on the heels of a commitment from Chase Morrison, a Roswell High School prospect from Georgia. The duo will add to a solid contingent from the state as there are currently 12 Georgia players on the roster.

Lackey announced his decision on social media.

The 2024 recruiting class has quickly grown to seven commitments. Ethan Minter (Virginia), John Rogers (Virginia), Benjamin York (Virginia), Grant Ellinger (Illinois), Christian Zachary (South Carolina), Morrison, and Lackey make up the list. 247 Sports rates all seven prospects as 3-star recruits. 247 lists Lackey as the No. 93 prospect in the state of Georgia.

Lackey picked Virginia over offers from a growing list of suitors. Teams with reported offers included Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Vanderbilt, East Carolina, JMU, and more. He’s the latest recruit to commit after a big official visit weekend held at UVA to start the month.

At 6’0”, 185 pounds, Lackey played both cornerback and receiver for South Gwinnett. He posted 24 tackles with 8 passes defended and 1 interception last season at corner, the spot where the Cavaliers project him to play. He also runs track and clocked in at 10.85 in the 100-meter dash. His Hudl profile shows a 4.47 40-yard dash time and a 50.9 time in the 400 as well.

This commitment represents the first cornerback in the class, which could be a position of need for this year depending on how some young players are slotted. The Hoos took one corner last season in Keandre Walker, but they also signed Suderian Harrison and TyLyric Coleman as designated athlete recruits plus Devin Clark, Landon Danley, Trent Baker-Booker, and Caleb Hardy as safety recruits.
