TheSabre.com Fan Friday: Rosters Take Shape For UVA Football, Basketball Teams

While spring sports teams begin to dial in for postseason play, college football and college basketball teams have been in full roster management mode in recent weeks. That includes the teams at Virginia.

While the transfer portal window has closed for the football side, the basketball window remains open for another week. There have also been some high school recruiting moves late in the spring. The UVA football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball teams have gotten some clarity on what their 2023-2024 rosters will look like heading into the summer.

For Tony Elliott and the Cavaliers, there has not been too much movement. The main additions in this part of the cycle have all addressed positions of need, though. On April 12, UVA landed 2023 high school punter Elijah Slibeck who will join returning starter Daniel Sparks as the only other player listed at punter on the roster. Two big transfers made bigger headlines. Penn State offensive tackle Jimmy Christ committed to the Wahoos on April 20, while Clemson cornerback followed on May 1. Those two Power 5 pick-ups are expected to be in contention for starting spots this fall.

For Tony Bennett and the Hoos, there was a lot of work to do to refill an overturning roster. On April 13, Merrimack transfer Jordan Minor pledged to the program. St. Thomas’ Andrew Rohde and Oklahoma’s Jacob Groves followed on April 18 and 25. That trio steps into potential roles on the wings or frontcourt with potential for combo guard type minutes for Rohde as well. The Cavaliers also added 2023 recruit Anthony Robinson as a late commit after he received his release from a previous commitment to South Florida.

For Amaka Agugua-Hamilton and the women’s basketball team, it’s been a busy spring. On April 7, Virginia announced the addition of Arizona transfer Paris Clark. Kansas State’s Taylor Lauterbach and Northwestern’s Jillian Brown followed on April 13 and May 4. Those three Power 5 transfers brought in two guards (Clark and Brown) and a center (Lauterbach). The Hoos also brought in Sweden’s Edessa Noyan as part of the upcoming freshman class in the frontcourt.

Fans have been discussing the roster additions on the message boards. Here are some of the threads.
