TheSabre.com Fan Friday: Ty Jerome In Headlines

Virginia basketball legend Ty Jerome made headlines coast to coast this week. On the West Coast, Jerome’s name came out in contract moves with Golden State. On the East Coast, he’s been back in Charlottesville for annual camps he holds in town and local media caught up with him on that front.

First, the contract news. The Warriors released a statement that they had extended a qualifying offer to Jerome. That means that Jerome is now a restricted free agent and Golden State has the right to match any offer sheet he may sign with another team.

Jerome played on a on a two-way contract with Golden State last season, which limited the time he could get into NBA games. He appeared in 45 games with the club last year and averaged 6.9 points, 3.0 assists, and 1.7 rebounds while hitting 38.9% of his 3-point shots.

Jerome’s qualifying offer is a one-year, minimum-salary contract with a partial guarantee. Reports put that deal at $1.7 million for the one year. The news came despite reports a day earlier that the Warriors were not expected to make the QO to Jerome. UVA fans obviously were excited about the news.

Back in Charlottesville, Jerome made an appearance at the annual Tony Bennett Basketball Camp and then helped run his own camp at nearby Albemarle High School. CBS 19, NBC 29, and the Richmond Times-Dispatch all caught up with Jerome at his camp. Those links are here or on The Sabre’s daily NewsLink page.

Jerome also met four-star point guard recruit Christian Bliss, who came to Charlottesville on an official visit. Jerome and Bliss have known each other for a while with both playing for the PSA Cardinals AAU program. Bliss, like Jerome (and Ryan Dunn, who he also met) is from New York.

The 6’4″ Bliss is set to announce his college choice and UVA is considered the favorite. Fans and other observers have compared Bliss’ style to that of Jerome and former Cavalier guard London Perrantes.
