TheSabre.com Fan Friday: Best Of Fan Favorites

The summer continues to roll along with things starting to pick back up next week at the ACC Football Kickoff. Two of the legendary coaches in Virginia sports history stirred up a pair of interesting message board threads this week, though.

On the football board, thoughts drifted back to the days of George Welsh and what it takes to win at UVA. Welsh rattled off 134 victories while coaching the Wahoos so he obviously had an idea. One piece of the puzzle – find really good players.

That’s what led to a thread that dove into some of the best players of the Welsh era this week. Among the names considered no brainers: Shawn Moore, Anthony Poindexter, and Chris Slade. Other names that came up frequently included Tiki and Ronde Barber, Thomas Jones, Terry Kirby, Patrick Kerney, James Farrior, and many more.

Meanwhile, the basketball board took a different approach. Instead of the best players, the thread asked about fans’ favorite players over the course of Virginia history. A lot of the names came from Terry Holland or Tony Bennett teams. Like Welsh, part of Holland’s and Bennett’s success was about having really good players. Holland won 326 gamesduring his tenure, while Bennett has climbed to a school record 341 wins and counting.

Among the players considered fan favorites in the thread: Ty Jerome, Joe Harris, Kyle Guy, Harold Deane, Marc Iavaroni, Jeff Lamp, Ralph, Sampson and more.
