Following the ACC Tipoff media gathering this week, the league released preseason voting results on Thursday. The media picked Virginia to finish 4th in the men’s basketball standings, while the women’s team was projected to finish 10th. Reece Beekman also received a spot on the preseason All-ACC First Team.
For Tony Bennett and his Cavaliers, that slot follows a common pattern from the media voting. Over the last 11 years, Virginia has been predicted to finish in the top 4 of the ACC standings in 10 of 11 polls (2018 was the exception). Either Duke or North Carolina has been picked to win the conference race in 10 of 11 polls as well. That continued with Duke as the top pick this season followed by Miami, UNC, UVA, and Clemson.
In those 11 years, the Hoos have had some success of course. Virginia finished 1st or tied for 1st in 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2023. The Hoos open their season on Monday, Nov. 6 against Tarleton State coming to the John Paul Jones Arena at 7 p.m.

Loading ...For the UVA women’s team, the 10th place pick represents an improvement. The Hoos were tabbed 11th in 2022, 15th in 2021, 14th in 2020, and 11th in 2019. The last time they landed inside the top 10 was a 9th place projection in 2018 and the last time they hit the top 5 was a 4th place projection in 2012.
Coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton does have a lot of talent to work with on this year’s team. The roster includes highly touted Charlottesville-area freshmen Kymora Johnson and Olivia McGhee, who joined a program with multiple returning contributors. The challenge, of course, is that the ACC is a premier women’s basketball league with seven teams ranked in the top 25 in the preseason polls.
