The “Week In Review” will be a weekly feature throughout the 2012 regular season and into the playoffs. It’s a look at how UVa’s recruits performed on the gridiron in the past week. Here is how last week played out for the Cavs’ recruits…
– Zach Bradshaw, LB/WR, Damascus (MD)
Bradshaw had two touchdowns — one 65-yard kick-off return and one 8-yard run — as Damascus defeated Rockville, 44-0. The Hornets are 7-0.
– Malcolm Cook, S/ATH, Fork Union Military Academy (VA)
As expected, Liberty Christian and Fork Union put on a great show last week, but the LCA came out on top with a 36-33 victory. Fork Union falls to 6-2 this season.
Cook had another productive outing, finishing with eight tackles and one pass break-up.
– Hipolito Corporan, CB, Westside (Houston, TX)
Westside dropped last week’s contest to Lamar, 42-7, to fall to 4-3 on the year. The loss snapped Westside’s 3-game winning streak.
– Corwin “Turtle” Cutler, QB, Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA)
The undefeated Dolphins (7-0) enjoyed a bye week. They return to action this Friday against Kempsville.
– Jack English DT/TE, St. Christopher’s (Richmond, VA)
English scored his first touchdown of the 2012 season in helping St. Christopher’s (4-3) to a 44-3 win over Pope John Paul the Great. English, who plays tight end and defensive tackle for the Saints, hauled in a 68-yard touchdown pass for the game’s opening score.
– Kirk Garner, CB/WR, Andre Levrone Jr., WR, Brendan Marshall, QB, Good Counsel (Olney, MD)
Good Counsel downed McNamara, 22-0. The Falcons are now 6-1 overall this season, and 3-0 in the WCAC.
Marshall completed 6-of-12 passes for 68 yards. Garner caught two of those passes for 38 yards. Levrone continues to sit out as he recovers from a broken tibia suffered in the team’s season opener, but he is hopeful he will be able to return any week now.
– Tim Harris, CB, Varina (VA)
Varina led Atlee by only seven points at the half before pulling away for a 56-21 win. The Blue Devils are 3-0 in the Capital District and 5-1 overall.
– Brad Henson Jr., OL, Monsignor Donovan (Toms River, N.J.)
The Griffins cruised to a 42-0 victory over Pinelands Regionals. Henson, who has attended UVa’s last two home games, has helped his current squad to a 5-1 record this year.
– Keeon Johnson, WR, A.L. Brown (Kannapolis, N.C.)
Brown couldn’t stop Hickory Ridge in a 63-42 loss. The Wonders fall to 7-2 on the season.
Johnson has missed the last several games with a toe injury.
– Zack Jones, WR, Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA)
Hampered by an ankle injury the past several weeks, Zack Jones returned to action this past week. He came up big for the Tigers, hauling in four receptions for 100 yards and two touchdowns (17, 19) in a 47-13 win over Western Branch in a Southeastern District showdown. Oscar Smith is now 6-1 on the year, 6-0 in district play.
– Micah Kiser, LB, Gilman (Baltimore, MD)
Gilman downed Loyola, 47-7, and is 5-2 on the year. The Greyhounds D has now allowed more than seven points in the past three games.
– Jack McDonald, OL, Boston College High (Boston, MA)
Boston College High defeated Marlborough, 28-12, for its second win of the season. The Eagles have lost three but will have a chance to even up their record this Friday against Everett.
– Taquan “Smoke” Mizzell, RB, Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA)
Bayside rolled to a 44-0 win over Tallwood to move to 6-2 on the season. Mizzell shined, scoring five touchdowns in three different ways (TD receptions of 56 and 71 yards, TD rushes of 1 and 2 yards, and an 80-yard punt return).
– Sadiq Olanrewaju, OL, Salisbury School (CT)
Salisbury improved to 4-0 with its 27-21 defeat of Worcester Academy.
– LaChaston Smith, LB, South Iredell (Statesville, N.C.)
In his second game back from a lower leg injury, Smith had a 39-yard touchdown run and an interception as South Iredell (8-1, 5-0 in the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference) held off Bandys, 24-13.
– Donta Wilkins, DT/OL, Potomac (Dumfries, VA)
Potomac moved to a perfect 3-0 in the Cardinal District after defeating Osbourn Park, 35-0. The Panthers (4-3 overall) are on a 2-game winning streak.
– Chris Nelson, DT, Victory Christian Academy (Lakeland, FL), Class of 2014 recruit
Victory Christian gained another one in the win column, defeating Orlando Christian last week by a score of 42-25. The Storm now has two wins to four losses. Also, click here to read PolkPreps.com’s write-up on the UVa-bound Nelson.
