Charlotte Weekly's Defensive Player of the Year in the 2007 season, Cockrell, a cornerback, intercepted 11 passes and returned five for touchdowns in helping his team to an undefeated season and a state championship title. He also hauled in 37 receptions for 693 yards and seven touchdowns.
Very fast, Cockrell also is a top performer in track. As a junior, he captured the NCISAA 3A state championship in the 100 meters and the 200 meters. His personal best 100-meter time is 10.88 seconds.
