Spring Football Report: Some Positions Up for Grabs

In his latest teleconference, Virginia head coach Al Groh took time to discuss the progress of his Cavaliers over the weekend during spring practice. The third year head coach also discussed his thoughts on the upcoming NFL draft, the versatility of his middle linebackers, and the possibilities of redshirts in the fall. Groh also provided an update on the injured Brian Barthelemes and some positions that will have battles for the starting nod come fall practice.

Position Battles

There will be plenty of competition this fall for several starting positions on both sides of the ball, according to coach Groh. He believes that center, left guard, tight end, and inside linebacker are some of the spots that will become battles for the starting spots this fall. Kevin Bailey and Zac Yarbrough both saw time as the starting center at some point last season as a result of injuries. Both Heath Miller and Patrick Estes had terrific years at tight end. Left guard should have several candidates up for grabs, depending on the recovery from injuries over the summer. And last but not least, everyone knows about the competition that will be seen at inside linebacker, where stud prospects Ahmad Brooks and Kai Parham will challenge last year’s starters for their positions.

“I think those positions are some of the more critical ones,” Groh said. “It’s not a bad problem to have, with all the talent we have at some of these positions.”
