On paper Virginia did not stand a chance to land Rockbridge County’s Jon Kirchner . Besides, the 6-foot-5, 260-pound
defensive lineman was raised in a household of two Virginia Tech graduates.
That did not stop Virginia coach Al Groh and his staff from recruiting Kirchner. The move paid off.
Kirchner wasted little time in making him decision known, and it seemed to be an easy choice.
In July of 2003, Kirchner shocked the Commonwealth’s recruiting world by indicating that it was Virginia and not
Virginia Tech that he wanted to play college football for. Stanford was also listed on Kirchner’s short list, and he
visited the school before selecting to wear the orange and blue at UVa.
