Heading into his senior season, Sean Gottschalk admitted he had a lot to prove and improve upon on the gridiron. A tight end and defensive end for Deep Run High School in Glen Allen, Virginia, Gottschalk, an excellent athlete who plays varsity basketball as well, had a breakout second-half of his junior season last year. He finished his junior season with 56 tackles and six sacks. While his defensive statistics may not be eye-popping this season, head coach Lenny Pritchard contends his player has continued improving.
At 5-0, Deep Run is off to its best start in school history.
“It’s good,” Pritchard said of the 2005 season. “Everything’s been a pleasant surprise so far. We were beaten pretty badly in our first scrimmage – I think annihilated is probably the right word for it. It’s a tribute to our kids working hard to get better. We’re young. We’re 5-0 and we’ve beaten two teams that were ranked in the Top 10 when we played them. We’ve done a good job so far, but there is still a lot of work to do. We have not reached perfection by any stretch.”
