UVa in the ACC: The 2006 Class

TheSabre.com caught up with Dave Glenn, award-winning editor and lead writer for the ACC Area Sports Journal who has covered the ACC for more than 15 years, for a look not just into UVa’s 2006 class but into how the Atlantic Coast Conference shaped out. Glenn gives his impressions of UVa’s 2006 effort, which UVa signees impress him the most as well as the winners and losers in the ACC.

Glenn’s overall impression of UVa’s 2006 football recruiting class…

I thought it was a little bit of a down year for UVa. Under Al Groh, I’m used to seeing big names like D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Ahmad Brooks and Darryl Blackstock and then seeing those guys work their way toward the NFL. And there were just not as many of those big names. Al Groh deserves credit for putting up the best recruiting class I’ve ever seen at UVa several years ago, and when you build that kind of reputation of course it’s going to be a disappointment when you have a year when you just don’t have maybe any consensus All-Americans. A couple guys made various teams, but when you build that kind of reputation everybody raises the bar of expectations and this year did not live up to that.
