Around the Horn: Future Looks Bright

After opening the season by winning 2 of 3 games at the Springmaid Beach Resort Tournament at Coastal Carolina, the Virginia baseball team returned to the friendly confines of Davenport Field for a sweep of their 12-game homestand.

UVa opened the home schedule with a three-game sweep of George Washington, a 17-2 triumph of William & Mary and a 12-0 shutout of Coppin State. Virginia continued its winning ways improving to 8-0 at home with another weekend series sweep of Bucknell. The Cavaliers added their 11th win of the season Tuesday night with a 5-3 victory over VMI and concluded the homestand with a three-game sweep of Delaware, including a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind victory in the finale on Sunday afternoon.

Virginia (14-1) returns to action today with a road trip to James Madison for a 2:30 p.m. tilt. Freshman Jeff Lorick (1-0, 3.00 ERA, 5 APP, 9 IP) will take the hill for the Cavaliers opposite Dukes’ senior right-hander Bobby Lasko (0-0, 5.40 ERA, 2 APP, 8.1 IP). Virginia football fans will remember former Cavalier Bryan Lescanec who is now a back-up catcher for the JMU squad.

On Friday, Virginia opens ACC play with a trip to Winston-Salem to face the Demon Deacons. Wake (7-4) is coming off a 2-1 series victory over UNC-Wilmington. Friday’s match-up will be the seventh game of an 11-game home stand for the Deacons where Wake is 6-2 on the young season. The Deacs are struggling on the mound with a 5.06 team ERA but are once again displaying their high-powered offense, already hitting 11 home runs. Virginia leads the ACC with a 1.43 ERA.
