Three straight wins. Better execution for the offense. A turnover that led to a score for the defense. More passes downfield. A decent special teams day. Three straight weeks of improving grades? Who got an A? What about Jonathan Stupar and the tight ends? The marks are in for the Georgia Tech victory.

(Grade note: The statistical grade accounts for 60% of the position grades and the subjective grade accounts for 40%. Red zone efficiency accounts for 10% of the overall grades.)

OFFENSE

Overall Grade: 87.58 (B+)

Notes

  • One of our areas of emphasis from the Georgia Tech scouting report was the importance of staying out of third-and-long situations. “Boston College averaged more than six yards per play on first down and faced just seven third downs of more than six yards. Tech’s three opponents this season had gone 4 for 26 on third-and-long (15%). The Hoos averaged an excellent 5.73 yards on first down and did the Eagles one better, needing to manage just six third downs situations over six yards, converting just one.
  • We also highlighted the importance of recognizing the blitz. The Jackets never got to Jameel Sewell , due, in part, to his mobility and due, in part, to excellent protection from the offensive line and backs. The receivers did a good job of finding the open areas vacated by blitzers and the line calls were well executed.
  • Virginia was the first GT opponent to score more than seven points in a quarter this season.
  • Virginia’s 21 first-quarter points were the most by the Cavaliers in a quarter since scoring 21 against Temple on Nov. 5, 2005. It marked the first time UVa scored 21 points in the first quarter since doing so vs. Maryland on Oct. 7, 2000.
  • Saturday’s game marked the third consecutive contest the Cavaliers have scored on their opening drive.

Red Zone Efficiency: 100 (A+)
