Today is the first day of preseason practice for Brookville’s (Lynchburg, VA) varsity football team. With 18 returning starters returning including quarterback/athlete Logan Thomas , rising junior tight end/wide receiver/defensive end Zack McCray and offensive tackle Devin Bolling , head coach Jeff Woody is anxious to get the season underway.

“We’re just going to keep on doing what we’ve been doing,” said Woody, whose team captured the Division 3, Region III championship in 2007.

There are many talented players returning for the 2008 season, headlined of course by Thomas, the 6-6, 225-pound rising senior who is one of the top athletes in the country. Coach Woody expects his star senior to become less visible on the recruiting trail now that preseason practice has arrived.

“Logan’s going to throttle back here a little bit and focus on Brookville football,” Woody said. “Logan is just being Logan right now. He knows he is the one being sought after, so he is content with where he is right now. Then again, he could come in tomorrow and say he is ready to make a decision.”

Thomas, who projects as a tight end/H-back/wide receiver on the next level, recently narrowed his list of schools to seven – Clemson, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and West Virginia. His most recent college visit was to Virginia Tech, which took place within the past several weeks.

“He took a tour, saw some academic stuff and learned about some of the majors he wanted to look at,” Woody said. “They showed him a few academic buildings. Coach Beamer outlined the program’s history and said that their greatest years are ahead. He met with Coach Stinespring, who detailed how they see him in their offense. They see him as a tight end or wide receiver type. They think he can do different things. They like the mismatches he could create.”

While Woody admits that Thomas very much enjoyed recent experiences at Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest, he did not state a favorite for the talented athlete. And, as stated above, he is not sure when a decision might come.
