Junior forward J.D. Weatherspoon is on the University of Virginia’s radar, as assistant coach Drew Diener checked out an open gym at Northland High School (Columbus, OH) earlier this week. UVa’s men’s basketball staff has been eyeing the 6-7, 205-pound wing since the beginning of July and has checked out several of the standout athlete’s AAU games.

“They are in the recruiting process,” Weatherspoon said, referring to the Virginia coaches. “Coach Diener came [earlier this week]. He wants to try to set up a visit for me to come down. Right now, they are just in the evaluation stage.

“I am interested in Virginia. They’re in the ACC. You can’t get better than that.”

Of his performance at the open gym, Weatherspoon said, “I think I did real well. My ball-handling was great and my jump shot was even better.”

While Weatherspoon was pleased with his offensive skills, he may be better known for his defensive prowess.

“I’m a defensive stopper,” Weatherspoon said. “I’m always guarding the other team’s best player. I’m so athletic and long, it is hard for defenders to get around me.”

Weatherspoon may not yet have an offer from the Cavaliers, but he does boast three official offers.

“Xavier has offered and they say I’m their number one priority,” Weatherspoon said. “Akron, Georgia Tech, Ohio State and Dayton are interested. Dayton has offered. Purdue has offered. USC is showing interest, too.”

Weatherspoon currently lists “Xavier, Georgia Tech, Virginia, Purdue and Ohio State” as his favorite schools. Of those programs, he has visited Xavier. He hopes to visit more schools this fall, though he doesn’t plan on making a college decision until his senior year.

“I’m waiting until my senior year to decide,” Weatherspoon said. “For now, I’m just going to go to some games and meet the players.”

Weatherspoon, who plays alongside 5-star junior power forward Jared Sullinger (a Ohio State commit), is rated a 3-star prospect by and He is currently ranked #135 in’s National Top 150.
