Two-minute drill success. Last season, we watched Jameel Sewell execute four-game wining drives for the Cavaliers. He completed 17 of 20 passes during that span for 199 yards including a 15-play, 90-yard drive to defeat Maryland. This season there hasn’t been much need for any late-game heroics until this past Saturday. The Cavalier offense produced a meager 168 yards in the first 57 minutes, but racked up 107 on their final drive and in overtime as QB Marc Verica systematically drove his offense down the field for an 82-yard scoring drive in regulation. He completed 7 of 8 attempted passes for 80 yards in 2:18 seconds.
Last week against ECU, Verica concluded the first half by directing a seven-play, 38-yard drive in 53 seconds, completing 5 of 5 passes for 46 yards. Virginia missed a 38-yard field goal. Although it was not a two-minute type operation, Verica also navigated a 12-play, 88-yard TD drive in the final 4:12 of first half against Maryland, staking Virginia to a 21- half time lead. On the drive, the sophomore QB completed 8 of 8 passing attempts for 80 yards, including the 15-yard TD strike to WR Kevin Ogletree . In the last three games, Verica has directed three half-concluding drives by connecting on 20 of 21 passes for 206 yards and two TDs.
