Coach Ron Mattes hopes to improve the play of the offensive line.
In the pressroom at Scott Stadium, there is a large board pasted to the wall that showcases a blown-up article from The Daily Progress. The article, written by long-time UVa reporter Jerry Ratcliffe, is about the 1984 Peach Bowl, in which Virginia took down Purdue – a landmark victory for the program early in the tenure of then-Virginia coach George Welsh. The headline reads, “By George, Cavs win.”
Ron Mattes was an All-ACC defensive tackle for that team. Twenty-six years later, by Ron, the Cavs will attempt to reinvigorate the offensive line.
