One of the top offensive line prospects in the state of Virginia’s 2011 class has cast his lot with the University of Virginia. T.C. Williams (Alexandria, VA) offensive tackle Jay Whitmire , ranked #10 in TheSabre.com’s Preseason In-State Top 40, has pledged to the Hoos over offers from Boston College, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pitt, Rutgers and West Virginia.
Our sources confirmed the 6-7, 290-pound standout’s commitment, but stay tuned for much more on the story as we can get it.
The Titans star senior is the fourth offensive line recruit — #24 overall — in Virginia’s 2011 class, joining 6-5, 295-pound Ross Burbank , 6-7, 295-pound Tim Cwalina and 6-8, 285-pound Kelby Johnson . A 4-year starter on the varsity level, Whitmire played defensive end as a freshman before moving to offense his sophomore season. He has started on both sides of the line each of the past two seasons, becoming a major contributor for head coach Dennis Randolph’s squad.
Whitmire missed the first few games of his senior season due to injury, but he returned to help the Titans (6-4) make a playoff push after a 1-3 start. He certainly has the size college coaches covet, but he is also athletic, playing wide receiver in offseason 7-on-7 competitions. In addition to football, the versatile senior also plays basketball and lacrosse.
