Most players have to wait their turn to play for Hyattsville (MD) power DeMatha Catholic. This was the case with 6-4, 245-pound junior Brent Wilkerson , who had little varsity experience until this past season, when he started at defensive end and saw significant action at tight end for the Stags. Before Wilkerson ever took the field as a starter, however, he had already earned a scholarship offer from the University of Virginia.
Wilkerson attended a Virginia one-day camp last summer. Certainly, he caught the attention of head coach Mike London.
“It came as a shock to me,” Wilkerson said of receiving an offer from Virginia. “I was really happy with my performance, but it was a surprise.”
London wasn’t the only college coach to notice Wilkerson’s talents before last season. Delaware came through with an offer as well. Following a standout junior season in which he earned second-team all-WCAC honors at defensive end, Wilkerson is no longer under the radar. And, of late, he has been on a roll recruiting-wise.
