Line, Fullbacks Lead UVa’s Blocking Efforts

Last week, the football depth chart breakdown focused on the quarterbacks, receivers, tight ends, and running backs. Let’s dive back in with a look at the offense’s blockers at the fullback and offensive line positions.

First, there are three fullbacks listed on the roster. Connor Wingo-Reeves (6’3″, 235) tops the position, while Vincent Croce (6’4″, 260) and Israel Vaughan (6’0″, 250) complete the order on the spring depth chart (For a PDF view, click here). The fullbacks serve mainly as blockers at Virginia where those players have accumulated less than 25 carries in Mike London’s tenure. In offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild’s first season last fall, the fullbacks did not record a carry.

Wingo-Reeves and Croce bring a taller frame to the spot, a trend that started with now tight end Zach Swanson, who checks in at 6’6″. Wingo-Reeves played as a true freshman last fall, logging snaps at fullback and on special teams. He seemed at his best on outside runs, but had inconsistent moments as the season progressed. Croce, meanwhile, flipped to fullback after starting his Cavalier career on defense (both on the line and at linebacker). He didn’t pick up many snaps with the offense in 2013, but his Good Counsel reports suggest he’s a ‘football player’ that makes plays. As he enters the second half of his career, Croce could find a way to contribute on game day.

The fullbacks aren’t the main blockers in the offense, though. The offensive line is. The Hoos have two big holes to fill with left tackle Morgan Moses and center Luke Bowanko both getting selected in the NFL Draft last weekend. That’s the blind side of quarterback Greyson Lambert and the man in the middle of all the blocking calls. Yikes, oh boy, or some other word of concern is appropriate here. It’s one reason many remain concerned about the offense in 2014.
